Call for Papers "Latin America at a Crossroads: Institutional Weakness, Ideological Shifts, and Crisis of Trust"

The Institute for Political and Administrative Sciences at the University of Rostock, through its publication Rostocker Informationen zu Politik und Verwaltung, invites submissions for the upcoming special issue titled "Latin America at a Crossroads: Elections, Ideological Shifts, and Crisis of Trust."

Since 1994, this publication has contributed to academic debates on topics such as elections in Germany, international relations, and international cooperation with Latin America, among others. Its primary objective is to disseminate high-level research generated within the faculty’s academic programs, aiming to contribute to the advancement of the discipline in both Germany and Latin America. This publication is a series of the University of Rostock and is open access.

Following the so-called “Left Turn” in Latin America, various right-leaning governments have been elected across the region. Amid these clear ideological changes, the structural weaknesses of Latin American democracies persist and deepen. A crisis of trust, corruption scandals, and populist threats challenge the democratic trajectories of several countries. What does the future hold for Latin American democracy?

We welcome original contributions that address these and related topics with a focus on Latin American realities. This issue will be co-edited by PhD candidates Hugo Jofré, Francisco González, and Mauricio Pol from the University of Rostock. We accept original articles written in German, Spanish, English, or Portuguese. Submissions (maximum 8,000 words) should be sent to hugo.jofreuni-rostockde. All manuscripts will undergo a review process conducted by the editorial team. Accepted papers will be published in Issue 41-Heft 41- (January 2026). Deadline for submissions: December 22, 2025.
